If the Apocalypse comes, beep me

I have been offered many apocalypsi over the years. The first one, of course, was the classic End Times model (Babalon, Beast, Jesus, Last Judgement, etc.) For years, I thought that was actually real.

Just as soon as I realized that was NGH (not gonna happen), I am offered Apocalypse #2, the Oh-My-God-The-Republicans-Have-Won! We are headed for fascism! model.

Yes, Bush has enacted the Patriot Act. Yes, Abu Ghraib was a huge scandal. So is Guantanamo Bay. No, my daily life has changed not at all, except for airport security checkpoints being a huge pain. The MIB's (Men In Black) have not searched my apartment. No one has arrested me for criticizing the government online or IRL. The Soviet Union used to ban government criticism, I've heard. No, we do not have secret police, reeducation camps, death camps, mass disappearances, or other apparatus beloved by totalitarian states everywhere.

It's Bush's second term. While they have gone way too far, they have not affected most people's daily lives in a catastrophic way. He isn't Hitler, folks.

So, Apocalypse #2 is not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things.

Then I am offered Apocalypse #3. The Eco-Fatalism model. The theme of that one has been explored in a previous post, so there is no need to recapitulate it. After processing #3, I noticed something.

Apocalypsi #2 and #3 contradict each other. #2 predicts surveillance everywhere, secret police, fascism, ad nauseum. #3 predicts total societal collapse because we will not be able to use our technology.

If #3 comes true, the government won't be able to deploy its technology to transport people overseas to torture them, as it does now. We will be out of oil. No oil, no fuel for ships or planes.

If #2 comes true, either we don't run out of oil, or else we have found alternative energy sources to run planes, ships, police cars, etc.

Once I realized this, I had a dilemma. I could no longer rely on my pessimism to predict my (and the world's) future.

Then I realized it was not my role or job to predict the, or even my, future. My role in life is to do my part of the Great Work and let Gods take care of the rest. They will decide what our fate will be. Our minds are too little to know the future. If we do the Great Work, all will be well, for we will be united with Them at death.

I wouldn't get too secure in a "can't happen to me" philosophy... yesterday the Patriot Act was extended indefinitely and already the NYC subways are subjecting people to random searches (in the aftermath of the London bombings) and there is talk that the DC Metro is also going to be doing similar searches. You'll probably be seeing those "Report Suscpiciuous Activity" signs in many more places than just over the interstates....

Yes, if the patriot act goes no further than to attempt to wrap people in the sense of security it is fine. Civil liberties are not infringed by a quick wand swipe, as long as warrants and everything else in the bill of rights is upheld an organizations right to ensure its security is not an issue. No one worries when you go to a night club that has metal detectors. I find that most of the peopel who protest these measures fall into 2 catagories, left wingers similar to the tree hugging terrorists who spike trees and sabotage bulldozers, or far right wingers similar to the Timothy McVey's of the world. This whole country is Bipolar, I think we need more televison coverage of golf and billiards to act as Seroquel to make them moderate.

Tell that to the fans of Dimebag Darrell.

to both, save posts...

The night clubs with metal detectors was to inspire fond memories of Chris Rocks "no sex in the champaigne room" ... "don't go to clubs with metal detectors, sure you feel safe on the inside but what about all the ______ waiting outside with guns? They know you don't have one!"
The FBI/CIA have been tracking countless trivial figures for ages long before 9/11 even before McCarthyism. Kenedy tried to stop them and George Bush senior killed him for it... Oops Im fucked, I went and said it the CIA killed JFK and who was the Director in '63? Conspiracy and mistrust of the government are what America was founded on. As long as the citizens have the ability to win back their freedom democratically or by force we will always be free, sadly liberal media has numbed many people and robbed them of the will to fight. My friends are dying in the hundreds all over the world because they believe in it, and so many back here are bad mouthing them, they say support the troops! then bad mouth the war the Commander in Cheif and the country.

Ok im done for a minute.

Considering we put all Japanese-Americans in internment camps during World War II and had the whole Red Scare thing in the fifties, this actually is not that bad.

I do not like what they can do with the Patriot Act, but it is unlikely to be a threat to me personally. I am a law-abiding white female, so they aren't going to be targeting me.

However, I will buy books with cash from now on. I don't like the idea of the government knowing I'm interested in the occult, as that's none of their business. And searching someone's medical records...that's really heinous.
